Music inspires action and creativity, and some studies show certain kinds of classical music help students with their studies. Can your favorite tunes help you win at poker.
Take a look around the poker room next time you play a live game, especially during a tournament. How many people are using iPods or other music players? And how many of them are using their music to help them win?
The world’s greatest Olympian, US swimmer Michael Phelps, always pumped up before a race listening to his iPod (so much so that some made claims that he had an unfair advantage) and there is no doubt these music players are hugely popular with poker players. Many, however, use them just to help with boredom, keeping their brains from shutting down during hours of folding hands. This is an important element of the game, but they may be missing out on a tool that could do much more for them.
Every poker player knows they need to change playing styles, either to respond to changes in the players at their table or as part of an over all strategy during a long run tournament. One trick to help poker players accomplish this would be to link playing styles to playlists.
On an iPod users can set up a playlist of a series of tunes and give it a title. Try picking songs that make you feel good and help you focus while you are playing tight and group them in a list. Next make a list of songs that get your blood pumping when you need to play aggressive, etc.
Try them out and keep them to hand on your iPod, and next time you need to switch styles in a poker tournament, switch playlists. Over time you will become conditioned to the music and will find it easier to change styles in midstream.
