In poker tournaments it is important to save chips whenever you can. Chips are leverage and power, in addition to being a way to keep score, so you don’t ever want to spend them when you don’t have to.

Playing small ball poker is a smart way to hold on to as many chips as you can. Small ball refers to a conscious effort on the part of a player to keep pots small and reduce risk on their part. For example, calling instead of raising or reraising.

Unless you have a monster hand, you should look for ways to play small ball until your hand improves. This does not mean “Don’t Raise”, it just means raise smart and don’t throw away chips -- in other words, don’t spend chips unless they can help you, and don’t over do it.

If you make a raise to attempt to shut down a pot, for example, and you are tempted to spend $500 to really make it hard for your opponent, make it $480. This is practically the same amount, and it is unlikely that $20 difference is going to make the opponent think “Oh, okay, now it’s worth it.”

Seems like such a small amount, right? However, saving that $20 in tourney chips will add up in the long run. Do this five times and you have $100 more than you would have, and that is $100 you can add to a pot when you are betting for value or pushing a big bluff.

Keep the pots small when you can to reduce risk, and you will save up your chips to use when they can really make a difference.
