Online poker rooms have a minimum requirement to play in a cash game, but don’t be fooled -- this is nowhere near enough to play the game. Read on to learn more about your online bankroll management.

When you sit down to a cash game at an online poker room, you are required to bring with you about ten times the ante or blind. This amount will be just enough for you to go broke in short order.

In a $1/$2 game, ten times the big blind would be $20. In a limit game this would mean a slow death, unless you got very lucky. In a no limit game this would mean a quick death, once again unless you doubled up many times.

In reality you need ten times this amount to be competitive. This means 100 times the big blind, or $200 in this example. This gives you the ability to absorb loss and keep making the right decisions, even if the results of those decisions lose you money in the short game.

Poker is a long game that makes players money over many sessions, or over many hours in one session. If you have a small bankroll when you sit down you won’t be able to last long enough to be profitable.

Another factor is the type of game. If you are playing in a fast, loose game, you will need even more money to absorb short term losses; some recommend as much as 200 times the big blind, or $400 in this example.

If these numbers sound outrageous, it just means you are playing in stakes too high for you. If you only have $20 to play with, stick to stakes that are appropriate, such as $0.10 and $0.20
