Where did the guy go who once played invisible basketball at the final table of the World Series of Poker? The guy who roared “BULL DOZER” while shaking his fists in a barely controlled passion of victory? Who is this polo- wearing young man meekly proving his poker prowess? Surely not Hevad Khan…
They call it the “Hevad Khan Rule.” Similar to how the National Football League in the United States made touchdown celebratory dances against the rules and leveraged heavy fines against the offenders, thanks to a few hurt feelings and “unprofessional” celebrations, there is now an “excessive celebration rule” in play at the World Series of Poker.
Oh, but how fun it was watching him rile up the table.
Khan, partially under the influence of waaaaaaay too many RedBulls, took hooting and hollering to an insane new level during the 2007 WSOP main event, forever ensuring a page in WSOP history for himself. But see him sitting at the table these days and you’d hardly recognize him.
This 23 year old from Poughkeepsie, NY, was a different man when he won the 2008 Caesars Palace Classic, thanks, in part, to a bit of traveling and a lot of maturing. While on vacation in Korea, Khan says he discovered himself and left the country changed. His calm, almost introspective manner at the table these days certainly attest to that. His “new and improved” Khan demeanor was also in pace at another major victor at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.
His victory at the Caesars Palace Classic also points to a change in playing style. During the 2007 WSOP main event Khan played excellent poker, but did get drawn into a few situations where his ego got him in trouble. At the Classic he had to employ patience and no ego, as evidenced by overcoming a five to two chip deficit in order to win.
